Sometimes people believe that jails are there to penalize lawbreakers, so they must be made to pursue a tough life inside during their sentence. I hold a partial agreement with this statement. I will discuss the basis of my point of view in the following paragraphs.
First, jails are built to reduce the increasing crime rate in society. It is thus vital that the convicts are treated a bit harshly in jails, so they may be motivated to spend a clean life and may want to stay away from jails. Jails around the world are not pleasant places to live. The lawmakers and the experts on criminal behaviour must have realized that inmates must be treated with strictness in jails. As a result, the prisons are normally small confinements serving the bare minimum necessities.
However, I feel that jails are also places for reformation. Thus, a convict should be provided a fair opportunity to make amends for their life in jail. A person should not feel that getting into prison ends their chance of living a decent and respectable life. Because of this reason, the jail inmates are taught many skills, yoga, and made to participate in religious and spiritual practices as they prefer and select. These skills make them happy and help them sustain themselves once they are out of jail, while yoga and spiritual practices help them stay balanced and calm.
To sum up, I believe prisons are definitely there to punish criminals, so they must be tough places to live in, yet they must be places where reformation is offered and second chances can be looked forward to.
