While some believe that traditional practices and heritage should be utilized to generate revenue by promoting them as tourist attractions, others believe such practices can lead to a decline in a culture. This essay aims to discuss both views before sharing my opinion.
On the one hand, some think that long-conserved traditional aspects of a community must be preserved from excessive exposure to the world by not using it to promote tourism and other commercial reasons. It is perceived that cultural aspects give meaning to a person’s existence in a particular setup and help one connect with their types on a superficial and sometimes on a deeper level. Commercializing the same may be equated to compromising the soul of a community and the bond the members of that community find themselves bound by. It is because once presented as items of sale, the traditional elements may be tweaked to honour the commercial forces and leading to a community losing its identity.
On the other hand, using tradition as an attraction for tourists is seen as a welcome step by some. It may be believed that such steps may offer platforms for more cultural exchange and additional opportunities to learn. It ultimately leads to more oneness amongst different cultures. Also, when a tourist visits a country, they wish to experience every facet of its culture, and cultural segments have been triumphant in attracting foreigners.
I believe, no doubt, the immoderate mingling of locals with incoming tourists brings in external influences; this impact may be particularly noticeable when there are influences from significantly dissimilar cultures. However, today, the mingling of cultures can neither be avoided nor should be seen as a negative development, for this trend can lead to more oneness in the world. Moreover, this swing can be utilized for economic progress by promoting hospitality ingrained in cultural interests.
