Some people think that social networking sites have a huge negative impact on both individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Social media has become an inseparable part of our life as it allows us to stay in contact with our kiths and kin. However, many feel that the use of social media has an unfavorable effect on people and society. I agree with this thought to a large extent, and the following paragraphs will explain this inclination in detail.

Firstly, these platforms have addictive tendencies for most individuals. People globally spend hours on these portals daily. Many people are pulled to social media knowingly or unknowingly and end up wasting hours. Also, social media has given rise to much competition among people. People tend to brag by uploading their happy photos and status on these platforms, which are sometimes fake expressions of their reality. When others see these photos, they either start competing or become depressed that their lives are in some way inferior to others. Knowingly or unknowingly, people tend to over-share their personal information. All the mentioned aspects make social media highly toxic for individuals.

Social media is not just unhealthy for people, but it is so for civilization. When people waste time, society suffers due to numerous wasted hours collectively. Social media is also unpopular for being a virtual space where people circulate rumors. Much of such news has proved fatal in the past. Since anybody can upload anything they want, it is hard to control the flow of information. Not just this, social media has given rise to an uprise in the number of cybercrime. Mostly, youngsters are the most impressionable and find themselves on the receiving end of financial or other types of forgery.
