A rise in the use of plastic for packing has been a matter of botheration. Though some assert that the onus of keeping a check on plastic material for packing is on the manufacturers and sellers, others believe that mainly consumers are responsible for the same. I trust that although both have a shared responsibility, the primary responsibility is with the customers.
On the one hand, some assert that the producers and sellers of products are responsible for ensuring the use of plastic for packing is minimised. Ultimately, the manufacturers and sellers are the ones that bring consumer items to the market; thus, they select packaging materials. Since plastic is inexpensive, easily available and helps preserve some materials for longer, it becomes an obvious choice. However, this attitude does not favour the environment. It has been believed that these people have failed to show enough commitment towards researching and finding suitable substitutes for plastic. It is up to these people to replace plastic packing material.
On the other hand, some believe that the onus to minimise the use of plastic packing is on the consumers. The market is, ultimately, driven by the choices of people who purchase goods. If the end customer is alert and demands more environment-friendly packaging, the vendors can be compelled to look for suitable alternatives to dangerous material.
In my opinion, the chief responsibility to ensure a reduction in the use of plastic material for the packing of consumer goods is with the end consumer since the market forces always act to honour them. If the consumers are careful and aware, no business can ignore their requests.
