There has always been a debate over how the health budget should be spent: on encouraging healthy living or treating sick people. I believe both should receive funds, though there should be more focus on a healthful lifestyle among citizens. I shall throw more light on this subject in the following paragraphs.
It makes more sense to expenditures directed to preventing diseases and promoting a healthy lifestyle since healthier citizens contribute to financial progress. On the other hand, if the general population is not healthy or fit, they can not work efficiently.
Secondly, unhealthy people can not enjoy life and live happily. Such factors can further cause many complications in society. For instance, physical illness can cause mental anxiety, trauma, and depression in people. Such people add to the burdens of their family members, friends, and society. Thus they contribute to the overall happiness index of a country.
However, despite taking all measures, a person may fall ill: one of the factors leading to this situation is unavoidable aging. Similarly, there can be more inevitable situations in which one has to go to a hospital or a physician. Thus, governments must direct funds toward opening and running multispeciality hospitals.
It is often said that prevention is better than cure,
so if money is spent on maintaining the health and fitness of citizens, the chances of diseases reduce. When the chances of illnesses subside, people live productive and blissful life, and the expenditure on treatments naturally subsidizes them. To conclude, a large part of the health budget must go into encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
