To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Reported on IELTS March 7th
It has been believed that historical shows and movies can be rich sources to gain knowledge about history though their authenticity may sometimes be questionable. I agree with this statement and will discuss my thought in the following paragraphs.
Television programs and movies are mass media sources. Nowadays, these have a massive impact on people, especially the young generation. On the other hand, studying history is often considered boring, and most do not prefer studying history books. As a result, most of us are not well versed in historical events; consequently, many fail to appreciate or learn from the yore.
However, when these past events are adopted in television serials and films, and if they are well made, the masses watch them. Such is the appeal of these media that sometimes those that are not expected to pick a history text-book, passionately experience motion pictures. Interestingly, some historical characters became household names only after their life became a subject of popular movies.
Regardless, it has been observed that since these are made for mass consumption, sometimes facts are twisted to make them more appealing or commercially viable. For example, occasionally, historical movies exaggerate the heroics of chronological characters, emporers, and fighters to add an element of drama to these; other times, music and emotions are added to make these movies likable to youngsters.
To sum up, we need to know the glory and struggle of our predecessors. However, most find it hard to study and appreciate history. Movies and Television series fill this gap and present history interestingly, so we may understand our ancestors. I do not find twisting the facts slightly harmful, for it ensures that past stories may reach the masses. As it is, no one knows what would have happened in the past.
