It has been reported that most criminals re-engage in crime instead of living a crime-free life after they are freed after serving their sentence for an offense. Following paragraphs will try to understand the reason behind this bothering tendency and suggest a few possible solutions.
Prisons are made for reformations and for punishing people involved in breaking laws. The judiciary and prison systems engage the offenders in various activities helping in reformation. Yet, many go back to older ways once they are free from jail.
There could be several reasons behind the unexpected actions of these people. Mostly, offenders lack skills since many start criminal activities at a young age and never get a chance to learn skills that can help them earn a livelihood. Their friend circle is dominated by people who violate the law regularly. After their term in jail, they start gelling with their old friends, and they are willingly or unwillingly pulled into their old lifestyle. Researches also show that these people lack the willingness to work hard to turn around their luck as they are generally used to getting things without much hard work. Ethically working and achieving something in life requires hard work and struggle, which these people may find burdensome, and a desire to adopt faster and easier ways may be too tempting to resist for them. Furthermore, it can be seen that society fails to accept a person who was previously proven to have been involved in criminal activities. Due to a lack of acceptance, ill-treatment, and moral policing, these people are left with no choice but to resort to older ways of their lives.
However, there must be a sincere effort on a social and judicial level to stop anybody from reentering the world of crime. The general public must show some empathy and acceptance toward these people. Most importantly, judicial systems must reinvent themselves constantly with the help of recent case studies and criminal psychologists. It has been observed that most jails do not function as reformation centers, for they are terribly managed.
