In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. Does this trend have more positive or negative effects on the society?

Due to immense development in the health sector, the mortality rate has significantly come down, especially in developed nations. As a result, there has been a rise in the population of older people. This essay aims to discuss the impact of this development on a society and its members. Moreover, a few suggestions will be offered to combat this situation before concluding.

There are certainly some implications for the growing number of aged people. Elders have experience and wisdom, so they can guide young people. However, older people are more dependent on others than their younger counterparts. A considerable fraction of old people cause an increased burden on health infrastructure and a financial burden on the government since they need pensions. However, most aged people fail to contribute actively to the economy. Furthermore, the family members of senior citizens have to take care of them, which requires their time and energy. It can add stress to their family members and neighbours. Not just this, the young members of families and children do not spend sufficient time with the senior members of their families.

Some steps can be taken by the government to ensure the adverse impacts of this development may be combated. First and foremost, there should be more communities of aged people where they can spend some quality time together and share their emotions with people of their age. Communities should also be built where these people can do less taxing work and become independent. Such communities can help seniors to participate in the workforce.
