In many countries, people increasingly talk about money, such as how much they earn or how much they pay for things in their daily conversations. Why? Is this a positive or negative trend? Reported on IELTS February 10th 2023

It has been observed that today financial talks dominate discussions, especially around matters like how much people make and the nature of their expenditures. There are reasons for this shift, and I believe it is mainly negative progress. This essay aims to discuss the causes behind this change and why this should be considered a detrimental effect.

First, it has been observed that societies have become more materialistic than before. People are forever busy making money and enhancing their social and financial status. This progress has got a boost from today’s consumer society. Sometimes, financial discussions happen because some people brag about their riches or express theirs. When one person brags about their money, others may develop an inferiority complex in themselves. On the other hand, some indulge in telling their sob stories related to their poor financial situation. When people talk about their adverse financial condition, it does not help anyone, for people have to manage their life themselves.

Secondly, one’s financial situation, decisions, and lifestyle are personal issues that need no room on social platforms. There are no reasons to discuss what they earn, how they earn, and what they spend. Such discussions lack depth, for they rob people of an opportunity to discuss social, emotional, and burning political issues. In other words, such shallow discussions are nothing but a waste of precious time. Furthermore, such discussions are also boring for others, for they may not be interested in someone else’s life.

To sum up, it is not just meaningless but superficial to continuously talk about personal earnings and expenditures. Life has numerous other aspects, so we should try to have meaningful and deeper conversations that enhance our knowledge or keep us cheerful. Thus, too many discussions regarding money are useless.
