A formal examination system has been used in most portions of the world to assess students’ academic performances. This essay aims to assess the usefulness and drawbacks of this system to evaluate which outweighs the other.
This system has been in existence forever and accepted by many due to several reasons. Firstly, it helps maintain discipline and regularity in studies with mathematical and logical methodologies to assess the performance of students and educators. Otherwise, it may be challenging to accurately assess the teaching methodologies at a place.
On the other hand, some demerits have also been attributed to the formal examination system. This approach gives rise to undue competitiveness among learners, for better-scoring students in exams are favoured by the systems, parents, and teachers. In fact, the students who fail to fulfill expectations are made to feel inferior and sometimes insulted by their peers, teachers, and family members due to too much emphasis on marks. This system is known to put a lot of pressure on students, especially young children, leading to complications in their lives. Even the so-called exemplary students are not saved from the heat of excessive competition, for one has to constantly strive to prove themselves. The worst part is, that there is a drastic shift from the joy of learning to everyone trying to score good marks.
