Around the world, people are now living longer than ever before. Some say an aging population creates problems for governments. Others believe there are benefits to society having more elderly people. To what extent do the advantages of possessing an aging population outweigh the disadvantages?

Due to significant progress in the medical field, life expectancy has gone up, leading to a higher percentage of the aged population. Some believe this change has been problematic for the authorities, while others assert that the aged population is a blessing. This essay aims at analyzing whether this development is more advantageous or disadvantageous.

First, an increase in the population of seniors exerts pressure on the system and government. It is because senior citizens need more help, support, and medical facilities. Government has to pay them a pension, an amount paid to senior citizens even when they are not working. In addition, they need the support of family members; one or more family members are constantly engaged in taking care of an aged family member.

On the other hand, others believe the presence of seniors can help us as a society. Firstly, they help the younger generation with their wisdom and experience and guide them. For example, an older person’s experience can help a person by saving them from making mistakes in personal life and business. Secondly, the presence of seniors can be morale support as they shower the younger family and acquaintances with love and affection; they can be instrumental in the safe and lovable bringing up of children of a family.

To sum up, life is not just about the economy. As discussed above, a senior person can be a blessing to their family and society in more than one way, for they can contribute to our lives positively. Also, the latest medical developments have ensured people can not just live longer, but they can live a healthier life too in old age. Thus, there are more advantages to having a higher proportion of senior citizens around.
